Le ciel est par-dessus le toit

LE CIEL EST PAR-DESSUS LE TOIT

First piece of the Cycle
TROIS CHANSONS TRISTES?
 with lyrics by Paul Verlaine

In ‘LE CIEL EST PAR-DESSUS LE TOIT’ I pictured in my mind Verlaine seated on the corner of his small dungeon (he wrote this poem in prison after a dispute with his friend Rimbaud), starring at the blue and stunning sky through out a tiny window, looking at the gentle swaying of the trees branches, hearing the church bells ringing in the distance, listening the peaceful singing of the birds… and suddenly becoming absorbed in his memories and fortune ‘Qu'as-tu fait (…) de ta jeunesse !’ The choral singing in this song intent to evoke this intensity of images and drama.
